Top 5 Long Term Companies To Buy For 2014

Two years ago, I picked 10 stocks that I'd be putting $40,000 of my own money behind and attempting to hold for at least three years. This has been, and will continue to be, the most honest and transparent way that I can try to help the world invest better: by honestly and openly discussing what I do with my own portfolio.

So far, the original $40,000 investment is worth $50,880 -- or $1,520 more than if I had just invested it in the S&P 500. That's pretty good, but it's interesting to note that despite a week of pretty solid reports from companies in the portfolio, the needle didn't move much overall. Here are the five companies that did the most to lead to such an effect.

Intuitive Surgical (NASDAQ: ISRG  )
Most of the time, when a company handily beats expectations for revenue and earnings, its stock gets a pretty nice bump. Such was not the case, however, for Intuitive Surgical, maker of the daVinci Surgical Robotic system.

That's because concerns over lower-than-expected guidance, and -- more importantly, over the long term -- possible changes in how the machine is used for hysterectomies are making investors take pause and reevaluate their investments. Read here to see why I'm taking a wait-and-see approach to the situation.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Oliver Pursche]

I think the first step will be an increase in share-buybacks and an increase in dividends. As such, I am once again overweighting large-cap multinationals, including some great European names. My favorites include Novartis (NVS) , Legget and Platt (LEG) and Visa (V) . Of course, the potential risk is that the cash horde remains and even grows, likely creating a deeper negative interest rate environment something that surely would be damaging to our economy.

Leggett & Platt (NYSE: LEG  ) , best known for making bed springs, is another company making a strategic shift. Over the last few years, the company has been selling off smaller and less desirable operations to focus on growth businesses. That's led to what should be a temporary slowdown on the top and bottom lines and a relatively depressed stock price.

On Dec.24, Mario Gabelli, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GAMCO Investors, Inc. added Communications Systems Inc. (JCS) at an average price of $11.05 and currently holds 330,172 shares of the stock. Recommendations of the Board
Communications Systems is engaged in the manufacture and sale of modular connecting and wiring devices for voice and data communications, digital subscriber line filters, and structured wiring systems, and through its Transition Networks business unit in the manufacture of media and rate conversion products for telecommunications networks.
Few months ago the firm announceda series of actions to increase revenues and improve profitability. The first change was to operate as a holding company, monitoring and supporting all the business units: Suttle, Transition Networks (TN) unit and JDL Technologies. With this ew format each unit will operate with a high degree of autonomy. This will result in the reduction of labor costs, the emphasizing of accountability in the units as well as better recognition of performance. "While difficult decisions for the Board, we believe the changes we have taken to restructure our parent company as a holding company and to focus on individual business unit performance is in the best interest of our shareholders and will increase shareholder value" said Curtis A. Sampson, the Company's Board Chair and Interim CEO. Furthermore, strategic investments in the TN unit such as marketing, sales and product development will boost revenues in the future.
