Every quarter, many money managers have to disclose what they've bought and sold, via "13F" filings. Their latest moves can shine a bright light on smart stock picks.
Today let's look at Lone Pine Capital, founded by Steve Mandel in 1997. Before that, Mandel was a managing director at Tiger Management. Lone Pine is one of the biggest hedge fund companies, and has reportedly outperformed the S&P 500 handily since inception. Like many value investors, Mandel is known to dig deep into companies, aiming to buy undervalued ones.
The company's reportable stock portfolio totaled $19.3 billion in value as of March 31.
Interesting developments
So what does Lone Pine Capital's latest quarterly 13F filing tell us? Here are a few interesting details.
The biggest new holdings are Valeant Pharmaceuticals Internationaland Virgin Media. Other new holdings of interest include Yandex (NASDAQ: YNDX ) , the Russian search-engine company that has seen its stock spike more than 40% over the past year. The stock surged on a strong first-quarter earnings report that featured revenue up 36% and earnings up 79%. Despite many bullish signs, there has been significant insider selling, and management is planning to buy back many shares. With Internet usage growing briskly in Russia, some see the stock as a good buy.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Matt DiLallo]
Oil-field services company, Schlumberger's (NYSE: SLB ) large size and global presence means that it really has a read on the pulse of the global energy industry. When Schlumberger executives speak, it's a good idea for investors to listen closely because the company can provide important industry insights. With that in mind, I'd like to point your attention to a couple of important quotes from the company's first-quarter conference call.

U.S. energy policy has been shaped by one critical event that happened 40 years ago this week: the OPEC oil embargo of 1973. Since then, the United States has embarked on an ambitious goal of drilling for our own oil and gas, as well as diversifying our energy portfolio. In this segment, Joel discusses why the shift away from OPEC domination could be a major opportunity for companies like Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) and Kinder Morgan (NYSE: KMI ) as well as whether OPEC is still the force it once was.

Brendan: Not a problem at all. What about the surprising amount of dollar-store companies that are public? You have Family Dollar (NYSE: FDO ) , Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR ) , Dollar General (NYSE: DG ) . You mention, in particular, Family Dollar, which is the lowest market cap out of all of those, as doing the best, an exceptional company. Why?

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) has dropped 1.1% after heavy-equipment peer Deere (NYSE: DE ) reported earnings this morning. Deere has fallen more than 5% despite beating estimates for its first-quarter results, as investors instead focused on a weakening sales forecast. Although Deere's agricultural-equipment focus leaves it somewhat more exposed to unpredictable events like weather and crop prices, Caterpillar shares the same general vulnerability to overall economic conditions that have led some customers to defer making large capital expenditures. Without a broader-based recovery, Caterpillar may continue to lag.
- [By John Divine]
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) stock refused to lose -- as it had in the previous four trading sessions -- and added 1.2% after announcing a $1 billion share buyback plan. The shares in particular will be bought back from a French bank. With a market cap around $54 billion, the repurchase agreement will materially reduce the number of shares outstanding, spreading the company's earnings among a smaller pool of shareholders. Caterpillar seems to think its stock is pretty cheap right now. It also bought back $1 billion of its stock in June.

Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) is taking the biggest hit on the Dow, crashing 3.1% today. The company relies on growth in emerging markets to grow sales, and China's GDP numbers will always affect the stock in the short term. A lot of this weakness is already priced into the stock, so it may not be bad for long-term investors. The company reports earnings next Monday, and estimates call for $1.44 per share in earnings, down from $2.37 a year ago.
