There are also some companies that strive to make their filings easy to follow and have an obvious desire to make sure investors understand their business. Specialty insurerMarkel (NYSE: MKL  ) is a superb example of that. While I wouldn't say that an insurance newbie will sail through Markel's filings, the writing and explanations are about as accessible as one could hope for from a fairly complex business.

In a recent interview right here on GuruFocus, Tom Gayner of Markel (MKL) had a few things to say about CarMax (KMX). This prompted me to give the company a closer look. What follows is a business analysis. We will save considerations of stock analysis, such as price, for a later discussion.

I think that is a business that will continue to grow. I don't see any reason why you can't have a Carmax in a lot of towns way beyond what they're talking about right now. I think being the number one dealer, and having the number one market share in used car arena gives you great information on what transaction prices are. Then you work on the process to be as quick and as cost efficient in fixing the car and getting it sold, and have the confidence from customers when you offer warranties on the products. Those factors create a virtuous cycle. The more you do, the more you can do, the better the pricing is, the more the customers like you, the more your brand matters. The company will be around for a good long time. The management has done a very good job of creating the system and executing it.
CarMax was formed as a unit of Circuit City in 1993 and was spun off in 2002. Used-car sales account for about 80% of revenue. Competitors include, but certainly are not limited to, AutoNation (AN) and America's Car-Mart (CRMT) as well as private party sellers.

Thinking about taking a European vacation this summer? If so, you won be doing your wallet any favors by heading overseas during the peak travel season. That right, summer is the most expensive time to go to Europe because so many tourists head there at that time.

SEE ALSO: 8 Great International Vacations You Can Afford

The cheapest time to visit Europe is November through March, says SmarterTravel.com executive editor Anne Banas. Even Europen vacations in early fall and late spring are more affordable than in the summer. But don despair. If a summer vacation to Europe is what works best for your schedule, there are ways to avoid paying an exorbitant amount to get across the Atlantic.

Book your flight as early as possible. Ideally, you should book a flight to Europe 11 months before your trip to get the lowest fare, says Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com, which monitored fares for more than 4 million flights in 2013 to determine the best time to book flights. But that doesn mean youl pay top dollar for a summer flight to Europe if you book now. Just make sure you purchase tickets at least six weeks before your departure because fares will dramatically increase after that point, Klee says.

The sharp decline in freight rates is mainly due to fleet growth and limited cargoes, according to Teekay. Nearly half of these ships are uncommitted to long-term projects. Back in February Golar LNG Limited (NASDAQ: GLNG  ) described the LNG tanker market as very challenging due to these reasons.

The great part about trading is the same thing that can make it a miserable game to play... nothing lasts forever. If you can spot the points in time when the winds blowing a stock are about to change, you can make or save a fortune. If you miss those subtle clues, however, you can lose... big-time. Enter Arotech Corporation (NASDAQ:ARTX) and Ariad Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARIA). Both have been well-watched stocks of late, and for food reason - both are big movers, in one direction or the other. Now, however, both ARIA and ARTX are poised to move in a new direction - opposite directions - and traders looking for a good opportunity may want to take a closer look at both [which is what you're about to do].

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

For those traders who were lucky and smart enough to be in an Arotech Corporation (NASDAQ:ARTX) before today, then congratulations - you're up at least 38% on your position. Now it's time to get out. Conversely, if you're looking for a new name to get into (or perhaps looking for a place to park your ARTX proceeds), then you may want to consider Pazoo Inc. (OTCBB:PZOO)... a tiny online retailer of health and fitness goods. PZOO has dropped several tell-tale hints that more upside is on the way.

One under-$10 stock that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Arotech (ARTX), which is a defense and security products and services company, engaged in two business areas: interactive simulation for military, law enforcement and commercial markets; and batteries and charging systems for the military. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up big by 98%.

If you take a look at the chart for Arotech, you'll notice that this stock is spiking sharply higher today right above its 50-day moving average of $1.84 a share with above-average volume. Volume so far in Thursday has registered over 430,000 shares, which is well above its three-month average action of 302,874 shares. This spike is quickly pushing shares of ARTX within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARTX if it manages to break out above some key overhead resistance levels at $2.35 to its 52-week high at $2.71 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 302,874 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ARTX will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4 to $5 a share.

Traders can look to buy ARTX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average at $1.84 a share, or below more support at $1.63 a share. One can also buy ARTX off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

5 Best Regional Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of StellarOne (NASDAQ: STEL  ) , a commercial, mortgage, and wealth management bank servicing small and medium-sized businesses in Virginia, jumped as much as 20% after agreeing to be purchased by Union First Market Bancshares (NASDAQ: UBSH  ) .

So what: Under the terms of the agreement, StellarOne shareholders will receive 0.9739 shares of Union First Market which, as of yesterday's close, equated to $19.50 per share, or a 20.2% premium. The combined entity will become the largest community banking institution in Virginia with $7.1 billion in assets and $5.8 billion in deposits. The synergies expected to be realized from this merger should add to Union First Market's bottom line in 2014 according to management.

Now what: If there were a sector riper for industrywide consolidation, it'd be regional banking. Although many small-to-mid-sized banks have recovered nicely from the recession, many are still struggling to bring in new deposits and generate loans because of tough peer-to-peer competition, and cash-strapped consumers having difficulty navigating a high unemployment and higher tax environment. Consolidation really makes sense for many smaller banks like StellarOne. I can't say I'm thrilled that it's an all-stock deal as that leaves some downside risk in shares from today's value for StellarOne shareholders, but it nonetheless should add value from Friday's close when all is said and done.
